How to Install a Third-Party Shopify Theme

If you have purchased or downloaded a Shopify-compatible theme as a ZIP file, Shopify lets you upload that file directly through the Themes area of your admin.

The process itself is straightforward. The important part is what you do before publishing it.

Before you install the theme

Check that you have:

  • The complete Shopify theme ZIP file
  • A valid licence for the store where you intend to use it
  • Any installation or setup documentation supplied by the developer
  • A backup of your existing theme

Do not unzip the theme and then upload a random folder of files. Shopify's upload process expects the theme files to be compressed into a single ZIP file.

Step 1: Back up your current Shopify theme

Before changing anything, create a duplicate of the theme you are currently using or download a backup copy.

Your products, collections, pages and blog posts are stored separately from the theme, but theme-specific settings, templates and custom code belong to the individual theme version. Keeping a backup gives you a quick route back if something does not behave as expected.

Step 2: Open the Themes section

From the Shopify admin, go to:

Online Store > Themes

Step 3: Upload the theme ZIP

In the Draft themes section:

  1. Click Import theme.
  2. Choose Upload zip file.
  3. Click Choose File.
  4. Select the Shopify theme ZIP from your computer.
  5. Click Upload.

Shopify will add the uploaded theme to your draft themes. It does not automatically replace your live store.

Step 4: Open the theme editor

Customise the uploaded theme while it is still a draft. Work through the key parts of the store:

  • Logo
  • Colours
  • Typography
  • Homepage sections
  • Navigation
  • Collection templates
  • Product templates
  • Footer

Do not assume settings from your previous theme will automatically transfer. Theme-editor settings and templates are specific to each theme.

Step 5: Preview the important pages

Before publishing, preview:

  • Homepage
  • At least one collection
  • Several product pages
  • Cart
  • Search
  • Contact and information pages
  • Mobile navigation

If you use apps that inject content into product pages, cart pages or the theme layout, check those as well.

Step 6: Test the buying flow

A theme can look correct and still create problems in the purchase journey. Test product variants, quantity controls, cart behaviour and checkout links before publishing.

Step 7: Publish when you are ready

Once the draft theme has been customised and tested, publish it from the Themes page. Shopify keeps your previous theme available as a draft, so you can switch back if necessary.

Are third-party Shopify themes safe?

They can be, but the source matters.

Shopify states that themes available outside the official Shopify Theme Store are not vetted by Shopify for quality or compatibility with core Shopify features. That does not mean every external theme is unsafe. It means you need to evaluate the developer yourself.

Check:

  • Who created the theme
  • Whether the licence is clear
  • Whether documentation exists
  • How support is provided
  • How updates are handled
  • Whether the theme has been tested with the Shopify features you need

Installing an ARACHNID WDS theme

ARACHNID themes are supplied as Shopify-compatible ZIP files. Upload the ZIP using the same Shopify process above, customise the draft theme, test your key pages and then publish it when you are satisfied with the setup.
